<br /><strong>when to use a value type instead of a reference type?</strong>
<br /><p>Access to the stack (thus structures -> value types) is designed to be <em>light</em> and <em>fast</em>, but storage of large ammounts of data on the stack could lead to lower application performance. It would be wise to use a reference type (thus class) in such a case.</p><p><strong>What about Garbage collection?</strong></p><p>I'm not too sure about this one, but my gut feeling tells me that because value types are used for the handling of smaller data, the typical scenario would be to create and use a value type, while not needing it later on. </p><p>So instead of creating and using an object which you could pass around, they value type can be collected by the garbage collector rather soon in it's lifetime, while something like an object (thus a reference type) could still be able to hang on for a later collection date. </p><p>Keep in mind that reference types would usually be involved in the handling of larger data, which could also influence the priority by which it is handled by the garbage collector.</p><p>Like I said, I'm a bit shaky about this explanation, so please help me out if you can.</span>
